Golden Days Are Over

Mexico is pure magic. Each corner exudes history and modernism, every street makes me think of the golden years of the Independence; remounts me to the greats that walked through these streets, of the brushes of Siqueiros, Orozco, Rivera and Tamayo which caressed the walls of the most magnificent buildings of the city.

Its architectural diversity knows no parallel: art deco structures interpose against Bauhaus lines, same which dialogue directly with Hispanic-colonial designs; glass, cement, steel, even wood, all form a ménage á neuf that provide a delicious feast to the eyes, to the senses.

Despite the current security and poverty situation, romanticism fills the air, and it's almost impossible for a smile to flourish under the Aztec Sun.

Traveling Through Time

Every time I grab my camera it’s like I travel through time. I know, photography is literally freezing time into space, into film, but each time I prepare to take a photo – while I frame, while I think about shutter speed and aperture – everything that surrounds me becomes irrelevant, it’s just me and the subject, astray in a limbo without space and time… until the image is finally captured by the sensor and the world continues its course.

It may sound extra cliché but being a photographer is an everyday adventure.

Donatella in 1993

One of my favorite design duos from Panama has to be Andrea Claus and Antonio Feuillebois from 1993. Even from their beginnings, their aesthetic has always been constant and in evolution: their first collection, while very simple in cuts and shapes was based on printing and serigraph; the latter – presented last March during MACRO – had more depth in construction, implementing the use of beadings, embroidery, clothing in plastic, feather work and their usual and peculiar prints.

Inspired in 90’s Miami, 1993 developed a collection that got us through the decadent glamour, the colorful delinquency (Miami Vice, Magnum P.I and Hawaii 5.0), the art deco architecture, its shades and lines. With the same basic pieces, this has to be their most complex collection to date.

Beginnings and Closures

This week’s been a total bitch to me. Normally I don’t like to complain about anything because you know… you have to see life from the bright side but man what a whirlwind this week’s been. Closing GOGO Magazine’s next issue was so hard (oh by the way, we are now online at holaGOGO.com so visit us!) but the final result brings nothing more than smiles to my face, and that’s the good thing about doing what you really love to do: no matter how hard it will take you to get there, the final goal always makes it up.

Luckily, I made a little gap between meetings and writing sessions to take some pictures just so you don’t forget my fat face –actually not fat at all. I’d like to also remind you that social media are actually a thing if you haven’t heard and we can be in contact and know about each other’s lives or just like mingle through the magical tap of our fingers; I’ve been doing a lot and it would be cool if you are part of it so find me on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr… just don’t be a creep ;)

Montmartre Dans Mon Coeur

He finalmente regresado a la realidad.

I’m home at last. But I’m completely honest, I missed Panama so much, I don’t even know why but I was really excited to come back home to my routine at the magazine, at the gym and just to nail what I like to do.

Nonetheless, Paris this year was a completely different experience from other years. I got t olive it as a local -I rented my own apartment so I had to do the groceries, cook, buy flowers to arrange the dining room and all the things that adults- and that’s what I miss the most.

On my last day a friend of mine took me to Montmartre (can you believe this is my third year in Paris and I’ve never gone to this part of the city!?) and I fell in love with its bohemian je ne sais quoi, the happiness that shines in the people who live there and obviously, with the vintage shops that abound.

Actually, this trench-coat was bought at Chine Machine (100 Rue des Martyrs) just minutes before we took these photos, definitely one of the best finds I’ve had in one of my trips; once again, Paris never let’s me down.

Street Walking

Back home in Panamá after two weeks of non-stop traveling and all I wanna do is keep on walking and discovering new things. Boston with Converse has been one of the best trips ever; Medellín for #ColombiaModa has been one of those experiences that you just jump to with absolutely no expectations and end up graciously happy and asking for more. I really cannot complain about what I do, I love my job so much and the fact that I can share all of it with you has no parallel.

Charles & Keith Private Lunch

………………………………………………..

If there’s one thing I’m obsessed with is etiquette and table manners, specially arranging the table, you have no fucking idea! What glass goes for white wine, red wine or prosecco; plate sizes, forks, knives, spoons, camera, and action! It is really a gay guilty pleasure for me; one that I discovered recently and that I’m sure will be carried ‘til the end of times.

A couple of days ago the people at Charles & Keith invited some bloggers and influencers to a private lunch at Nina Concept Store so we could discover the mint new collection that is arriving in stores and guess what, the tables were fucking gorgeous, I was drooling since point –A to point –B.

In case you are not aware, Charles & Keith has its origins in Asia but has quickly won over the European and North American market. Today it has arrived to Panama with what I call “Accessories that Are So Good You Don’t Want to Share with your Sister”.

For this season Mr. Charles and Mr. Keith focused on re-visiting classics, rock n’ roll touches and colorful prints, check the complete post to see which bag I left with ;)

Holy Cutarras

I’m talking ‘bout you).

Holy Week is for calming, soothing and laid back style. Whether you’re going to the beach, the countryside or you’re gonna stay in the city, try to keep it simple and with no fuzz. That’s why I want to share with you an I’m-just-gonna-lay-in-the-couch-and-binge-watch-all-my-shows look (Empire, I’m talking about you honey), featuring a very special gift I was given this past week: a pair of cutarras. For those of you who do not know, a cutarra is the Panamanian leather sandal of excellence, very traditional, it is often seen being worn by the people in who live in the Central Provinces (Veraguas, Coclé, Herrera, etc.), made to measure I think it’s safe to call it Panamanian Haute Couture. They are incredibly comfortable and easy to put on, just in case something bumpy happens.

The great thing is that Santé Cutarras, a little company started by a dear friend, has started an initiative to re-invent these traditional sandals and bring them to the young folks.

With that being said, have a happy Holy Week, try to rest and renew yourself, just as the outfit, with “no fuzz”. Oh, and don’t forget to follow Santé Cutarras on Instagram (@San7eCutarras).

Merry Missoni

///////////////////////

Christmas is always the best season for eggnog sipping, rom-coms, dinner parties and... shopping. Although I profess Smart shopping to everyone, it’s kind of impossible to ignore all the shopping bags around the mall and somehow fall for the trip, luckily a lot of designer brands have arrived to PTY just in time for the merry holidays, MMissoni is one of dem.

I’m loving the variety of pieces they have right now, there’s something for you if all you want to party this season, but if you’re in the mood of just curling up next to a fireplace with Frank Sinatra as soundtrack or maybe just stay home and enjoy the day with family or friends, or lovers ahahha

This week I’m gonna be more active than normal in the blog, not just because I have a lot to show you but a lot to recommend too; coming up is THE MCQUEENISMYPAPI CHRISTMAS GUIDE, a list of items I really want to get but would love even more for you to have (you know, giving is better than receiving and shit), so stay tuned for more :D

Bus Stopping #NBLAteam

///////////////////////////////////////////////

Our second day in Boston started kind of abruptly.  The night before Gerard, Pancho, Fiorella and I decided to get a taste of Boston’s nightlife and ended up at a gay bar called Cure Lounge that was more like a secret party at a theater’s basement, all in all we had a great time that we returned to the hotel at 3AM, weirdly I was able to arrange my outfit for next day (drunk obvs) and went to bed quietly. Fast-forward to the next morning, I woke up happy and relaxed thinking that 9.40AM was the time for us to be at the lobby, well… it was actually at 8.40AM. The troop left me.

Like the independent bitch that I am, I grabbed the bull by the horns and immediately took a taxi to the New Balance factory at 5 South Union Street. Forty minutes later I found myself at the entrance of the factory, just in time for the tour through the Design & Production Departments, where we learned detail by detail how more than 200 pairs of sneakers are done by hand every day, how they’re tested and the new projects New Balance is venturing in. We also had the opportunity to design our own branded New Balance kicks, since I am a hardcore fan of everything retro and 80’s I went for colorful patchwork with denim details, I think Culture Club would totally rock them :D
