The New Uber Haus

Long gone are the days when the mall reigned over Panama’s shopping habits. If I’m right, it was four or five years ago when the first boutique movement started – and I’m not being shady to all of the other boutiques but we’re talking about lifestyle and concept boutiques.

Out of all of these new places, Uber is probably one of my favorites. Ever since it first opened in November 2012, these girls were on point when it came to giving the market what it lacked of, no one has ever fulfilled the need of their customers like Alessa, Em and Tere did, and are still doing. To the point where it is no longer Uber Shop, it became Uber Haus.

And yes, it is indeed one of the coolest places in the city, you’ll always find cool peeps and friends to hang out while you shop or grab something to eat/drink. Fashion-wise is also very ahead of the trends, especially in Panama, they sell from Mara Hoffman to the top Australian brands.

But not it’s time to evolve and new spaces have been added to the Uber family:

In Detail: Sousa Pitti AW 16

Andrea Sousa is young and has something to say… or at least that was shown through “The Tale of Genji”, the inspiration behind her latest – and also first – Autumn/Winter collection, which was showcased in the middle of Panama City last week.

Considered the first modern novel (between 1008 and 1021 by Lady Murasaki Shikibu), The Tale of Genji portrays the life of Hikaru Genji (or Shining Genji) the son of Emperor Kiritsubo. “What really caught my attention was the fact that despite being centered around Genji, the further you went, the real protagonists are the women in his life. It’s a testimonial of the lifestyle those women carried themselves with, taking in account the male-centered society they were part of (Heian period),” explains Andrea.

And just like every single Asian-inspired piece of design should do, the collection presented a subjacent exuberance that was also methodic and very focused, especially in the textiles department: silk brocades, poi de soie, alpaca wool and boiled wool, that along with conclusive lines and eventual play of volumes had an ongoing dialogue. A reconciliation of the Geisha femininity and the discipline of the Japanese Miko uniform: silk hakamas and wool haoris.

Being “Genji” the third collection by the brand, it indicates undisputable growth – even shown in the “Malaysian Tundra” color palette full of deep purples with moss green. But also noticeable was, at least for me, an indiscretion that could also be considered an editing slip-up: when creating a collection with such cultural and a one-dimensional - not to mention particular - design details, Geisha prints are left redundant and a little bit costumy… but also serve as learning experiences for future work.

Is this clothing for the Panamanian woman? Maybe not (this collection will reportedly be shipped to Vancouver after being shown during Vancouver Fashion Week last March), but what will be left clear is that we don’t need to be aristocrats to feel and dress like Japanese princesses, or at least that’s what Sousa Pitti’s Tale taught us.

Charles & Keith Private Lunch

………………………………………………..

If there’s one thing I’m obsessed with is etiquette and table manners, specially arranging the table, you have no fucking idea! What glass goes for white wine, red wine or prosecco; plate sizes, forks, knives, spoons, camera, and action! It is really a gay guilty pleasure for me; one that I discovered recently and that I’m sure will be carried ‘til the end of times.

A couple of days ago the people at Charles & Keith invited some bloggers and influencers to a private lunch at Nina Concept Store so we could discover the mint new collection that is arriving in stores and guess what, the tables were fucking gorgeous, I was drooling since point –A to point –B.

In case you are not aware, Charles & Keith has its origins in Asia but has quickly won over the European and North American market. Today it has arrived to Panama with what I call “Accessories that Are So Good You Don’t Want to Share with your Sister”.

For this season Mr. Charles and Mr. Keith focused on re-visiting classics, rock n’ roll touches and colorful prints, check the complete post to see which bag I left with ;)
