Chanel Puts It On The Ritz

Shanghai, Edinburgh, Dallas and even Salzburg. All these cities have something that binds them: Chanel métiers d'art.

The Métiers d'Art collections are normally presented outside of the average fashion calendar (although that coincide perfectly with the Pre-Fall collections) and their goal is mainly to celebrate the savoir-faire of the maison and the hands that have sewn every single thread of its history.

Criticized many times for its outlandishness - that many say are just to put away the attention to the lack of perspective on the clothes, which translates in exhausting collections of repetitive looks that go up to 100 exits - these events are married also with incredible locations (Mumbai in 2012, Edinburgh in 2013, Dallas in 2014, Salzburg in 2015 and Rome in early 2016), to which only top clients and international editors are invited, flown and feted.

Alber Elbaz' Manifeste

While in Paris the stars played their game and got me to Alber Elbaz’ Manifeste at le Maison Européenne de la Photographie.

An exhibit that incredibly submerges you into the world of Lanvin, shows how so many parallel worlds collide in just one convergence point: the Creative Director.

With that being one of the pillars of this photographic public essay, it includes the work of photographers such as But Su Lai, Mark Leibowitz, Katy reiss, James Bort, Juliette De Cunha and Alex Koo; so many points of view that have only one point of convergence: Alber Elbaz’.

If you’re in Paris before the 31st of October don’t hesitate and be a part of this Manifeste, you’ll thank me later.

Montmartre Dans Mon Coeur

He finalmente regresado a la realidad.

I’m home at last. But I’m completely honest, I missed Panama so much, I don’t even know why but I was really excited to come back home to my routine at the magazine, at the gym and just to nail what I like to do.

Nonetheless, Paris this year was a completely different experience from other years. I got t olive it as a local -I rented my own apartment so I had to do the groceries, cook, buy flowers to arrange the dining room and all the things that adults- and that’s what I miss the most.

On my last day a friend of mine took me to Montmartre (can you believe this is my third year in Paris and I’ve never gone to this part of the city!?) and I fell in love with its bohemian je ne sais quoi, the happiness that shines in the people who live there and obviously, with the vintage shops that abound.

Actually, this trench-coat was bought at Chine Machine (100 Rue des Martyrs) just minutes before we took these photos, definitely one of the best finds I’ve had in one of my trips; once again, Paris never let’s me down.

Random Encounter / Sarah

I met Sarah on my way out of the Louis Vuitton SS16 show this morning. I stopped her for a beauty picture but since she had already taken her make-up off we just immersed ourselves in conversation about this season’s sheananigans.

Sarah is from Memphis, city where she was also discovered by a booker. She now lives in New York in order to pursuit her career as a model, which by the way seems to have started with the biggest bang: Alexander Wang’s last Fall/Winter, and she walked for Hedi Slimane’s Saint Laurent last night.

Girls like Sarah are a million nowadays. The modeling world is much more competitive than the one that revolves around designers, bloggers or press, the important thing –as Sarah showed me- is to always keep yourself grounded and keep clear in mind that, in the words of Heidi Klum: “in fashion one day you’re in, and the other day you’re out.”

This season I am really not feeling the street-style, I feel like it has reached a point where its prostitution had found a dead-end street even in Paris –a city that I considered virgin from this whirlwind.

For that reason I’m leaning towards more classic portraits like this. I love how they evoke much more than the we-have-all-seen shot of the expensively dressed woman who looks like “she doesn’t care” but obviously spent hours planning her outfit.

Harper's Bazaar x MAC Cosmetics: #LatinsInParis

By this time it’s very probable that all of the miles between New York, London, Milan and Paris start to take a toll on us fashion people, but there’s a big difference when we talk about Latins.

Warm-blooded and always in the mood for a good party, Harper’s Bazaar and MAC Cosmetics decided to celebrate this spirit at the residence of the Mexican ambassador in Paris. Known faces everywhere, the usual "vérre du champagne" and special cocktails formulated the perfect combination for a night to remember.

It may "fait froid" in Paris, but the Latin warmth will always be indisputable ;)

//////////////////////////////////////////////////

This is my second year in Paris for the SS collections. September in Paris is always a rejoice and happy time since the complete city feels overwhelmed by the vibrancy and excitement that the fashion crowd brings. Amidst all the shows that I had the chance to enjoy Chanel was obviously one of the highlights.

Very early in the morning I left my loft in 19 Rue de la Mare in the Menilmontant quartier, took my Green Metro line, transferred to the yellow one and made my way directly to the Gran Palais.

With Pet Shop Boy’s I’m Not Scared on the background, a stylish crowd of models, capitalized by none other than Cara Delevingne and Binx Walton, strutted down la rue de le Boulevard Chanel in what seemed like a whirlwind of colors: oranges, greens, pinks, violets, blues in every shade and suddenly the Holy Chanel triad, black, white and navy blue; three piece suits, Bertha collared long jackets á la Fred Astaire paired with trousers, floral prints were sprinkled over dresses, jupes en vers, knee-high boots, cravates, pea-coats, light capes, vaporous blouses and peplum dresses.

But it was the political subtext that drew the most attention; in a bold, liberal, feminist move, all the models styled themselves, from makeup to hair, as if saying their values were determined by whom they were, not how they looked. Same statement was emblazoned all over the season bags, which in true feminist and revolutionary spirit showed what they though through phrases such as: “Free Freedom”, “History is HER Story”, “Ladies First” and “Women’s Rights Are More Than Alright!”. After a season spent in the supermarket it was about time to take the street, where the real democracy of fashion and life is made; at the Boulevard Chanel everything is possible.

And like any Parisian street, magic is made in a glimpse of an eye. Tweeds, crepes, cottons had a ménage a trois with silks, cigalines, linen, voile cotton, organza and lace; the freedom of creativity was felt all over. But it was the moment when Gisele Bundchen walk merely twenty meters from me that I could truly identify the Chanel woman of this season, a woman with flirt, intellect, one who knows what she wants and how she wants it.

One detail that really caught my attention was the absence of escarpins (or high heel) and evening wear, the whole collection was composed of many (emphasize in many) individuals, fact that was explained by Le Kaiser by saying, “I want to create clothes that women want to wear; Chanel wasn’t originally made for red carpets, and yes, Chanel may be the epitome of elegance, but it is my duty to keep the brand in our era, which translates in adaptation, elegance is brought to life through action, and action is made on the streets.”

Once the show was over I took my time to walk the Boulevard. It was pure bliss when I met people who I really admire, from Baz Luhrmann (my favorite director of all times) to Xavier Dolan, a Canadian filmmaker who made movies that I really love - J’Ai Tué Ma Mére, Laurence Anyways and Les Amours Imaginaires.

And what better way to follow up this massive show than with a petit dejeneur at Angélina on the Rue de Rivoli? Obviously, Chanel can only by side ordered with a delicious Mont-Blanc, with a hot cup of Thé Mathilde, bon appétit!

#FashionGlobeTrotter Mustard & Ketchup

This is my second year in a row attending the big leagues of fashion aka Paris Fashion Week (I’m sure not even Alex Rodríguez would be up for this game). If there’s one show that always moves me and brings kind of tears to my eyes is the Louis Vuitton show (I hope those were some LV branded tears at least); this year Nico Ghésquiere –the one’s closet to always call him Nico, hello!- decided to show his SS15 at the mint new Fondation Louis Vuitton, a building that seriously has got to be one of the most beautiful pieces of architecture that I’ve ever seen. Obviously, once I knew I was invited to this show all I could think was “what the fuck am I gonna wear?”, I needed something fashion-forward yet sensible and nonchalant, something that could let other dream but not fall asleep, and something that could translate well in Street-style pictures (I mean duh! You gotta milk the cow if you want to make it into Le21éme!), luckily for me, while I was in London I met the work of the amazing Edeline Lee, a designer that knows all about showstoppig-comfortable-edgy designs. Before it was too late –it is never too late- here’s the head-to-ankle look from her SS15 collection shown at Somerset House London; hope you like it, and if you don’t, well it is yours to miss :D
