Gabriela Esplá Changes Seasons

Uno de los más grandes privilegios que he tenido ha sido trabajar o conocer a las personas más talentosas del medio. Y sin duda una de ellas ha sido Gabriela Esplá. A ciencia cierta no recuerdo cuando ni donde la conocí pero durante mi tiempo como editor de una revista muy conocida acá en Panamá pude trabajar en conjunto para el segundo Art Issue en el que buscamos plasmar su pintura a través de fotografía utilizando la moda como medio.

Desde entonces hemos entablado una amistad muy linda basada en borracheras y conversaciones existenciales. Fue para mi un honor cuando Gaby, como sus allegados la conocemos, me pidió que escribiera el texto que acompañaría su primera muestra individual en la Galería Mateo Sariel, exhibición que abre hoy 19 de marzo.

No podría estar más orgulloso de mi amiga y por eso quiero compartir con ustedes el texto que le dediqué a ella y a su trabajo, con el fin de que saquen un momentito y se pasen por la galería y aprecien de cerca este “cambio de temporada”.

One of the biggest privileges I’ve had is to get to know and work with the most talented people in my country. Gabriela Esplá is one of them. Being certain, I really don’t remember well where and when we met, but what I do remember is the first time we worked together during my time as the editor of a well-known magazine here in Panama. Altogether, for the second Art Issue of the publication, we were looking to merge her paintings with photography using fashion as the medium.

Since then our relationship has evolved into a solid friendship that’s based on drunk rants at bars and existential conversations during coffee. But it wasn’t until recently that Gaby (as her close friends call her) asked me to write the main review for her first solo show at Mateo Sariel Gallery that I knew that our friendship was more than just shit & giggles, I really felt honored.

I couldn’t be prouder of my friend, and that’s why I’m sharing this very personal text that I dedicated entirely to her and her work. So please take some time to visit the gallery to see from up-close her “change of season”.

8 Recomendaciones para Ver en este IFF Panamá

Fue el año pasado cuando oficialmente me enamoré del Festival Internacional de Cine de Panamá (@IFFPanama). Ver a la gente agitada por ver buen cine, hacienda sus filas y sus horarios para no perderse ninguna de las películas me demostró que en mi país hay una necesidad de cultura que si se promueve bien puede llegar a cualquier rincón del país (este año las proyecciones gratuitas al aire libre han llegado hasta Chorrera).

De vuelta al ruedo, la organización este año ha presentado una agenda espectacular de películas tanto nacional como internacionales de autorías que van desde Rusia (Paraíso) hasta Irán (El Cliente), pero para simplificarte la tarea de decidir qué boleto comprar aquí te comparto las diez películas que más quiero ir a ver.

I believe it was last year when I officially fell in love with the International Film Festival of Panama (@IFFPanama). Seeing grown-ups and kids excited to see great movies, in line for hours maybe while preparing a schedule to not miss one film really showed me that Panamanian audiences are thirsty for culture, which, if well promoted can reach up to every single corner of our country (this year free screenings have gone even to Chorrera).

Back on track, the organization has delivered a spectacular agenda of international and national films that go from Russia (Paradise) to Iran (The Client), but to save time for you I’ve gathered ten movies I’m really excited to see, hope you feel the same.

Winnie's Divine Comedy

“Vamos a Darnos con Todo Mi Amor Que el Fin Del Mundo Ya Está Aquí” fue el título que Winnie Sittón le dio a su primer show de stand-up comedy hace ya cuatro años.

Desde una perspectiva externa, es seguro decir que la comedia está de moda en Panamá. Cada vez más bares, pubs y hasta restaurantes de alta categoría dedican una o dos noches en sus agendas semanales a este estilo de comedia, pero sólo Winnie ha sabido establecer su propio sistema y ser exitoso bajo sus propios méritos.

"Vamos a Darnos con Todo Mi Amor Que el Fin del Mundo Ya Está Aquí" was the title of Winnie Sittón's first stand-up comedy show four years ago.

From an external perspective, it is kind of safe to state that comedy is in the heart of fashion right now in Panama. More and more bars, pubs and high-end restaurants are dedicating their scheduled nights to this style of comedy, but Winnie is the only man who has been able to establish his own system and success at it.

On Our Way to La Décima!

La clave para pasar una buena noche es simple: buenos tragos, buenos amigos y The Beachers. 

Anteanoche fue el primer fundraiser de la Décima Bienal Centroamericana, que desde sus inicios en 1998 ha sido gestionada por parte de Panamá por Tía Carmen Alemán Healy (Grupo Arteconsult y FundAHrte) y la Fundación Fernández Pirla. 

Con una subasta silenciosa con piezas de artistas como Cisco Merel, Fernando Toledo, Gabriela Esplá, Sandra Eleta, Anna Carolina Gelabert, Santiago Cruz, y muchos más, un súper atinado monólogo del genio Jaguar Clandestino y para finalizar los increíbles tunes calipsos de los Beachers que en serio nos pusieron a TODOS a bailar. Fue una noche mágica, la vibra que circulaba sobre nosotros como una nube era burbujeante y contagiosa, de verdad espero que más noches como esta se repitan.

The formula for a great night is simple: drinks, great people and… The Beachers!

Wednesday night was the witness of the first fundraising party on our way to the Tenth Central American Biennale, which from its beginnings has been handled by Carmen Alemán Healy from Grupo Arteconsult and FundAHrte, and the Fernández Pirla Foundation. 

With a silent auction with pieces by artists like Cisco Merel, Fernando Toledo, Gabriela Esplá, Sandra Eleta, Anna Carolina Gelabert, Santiago Cruz and many more, a right-on-the-spot monologue by the master of words Jaguar Clandestino, and to end things rights, the calypso tunes of The Beachers. It was truly a magical night, the vibe that hovered above us like a cloud was bubbly and contagious, I really hope night like that would repeat.

MACROFEST/ VisteLaCalle Expo

GOGO

Hace ya un tiempo he estado comentándoles sobre un trabajo del que “les explicaría después”, bueno, ese después ha llegado ;)

Desde chiquito coleccionado revistas. Primero fueron las Disney Aventura que venían dentro de un periódico panameño, luego vinieron las revistas de Rebelde (esas que pegaron con la versión mexicana de Rebelde Way). Más adelante, por el 2007, comencé a coleccionar mis revistas de moda, las Vogue fueron las primeras; hoy en día puedo decir que tengo una colección bastante respetable que incluye: CR Fashion Book, Visionare, Lula, Muse, Vs., Interview Magazine, Flaunt y un montón más.

Como se darán cuenta, este mundo editorial lo llevo entre ceja y ceja desde pequeñito y aunque no lo crean, todos esos años de sentarme en mi cuarto a leer hoja por hoja me ha ayudado a tener una noción más clara de cómo escribir y  de cómo analizar una revista. Por eso no es de extrañar que mi mayor sueño sea trabajar como editor de una revista reconocida mundialmente. Pero uno nunca puede comenzar desde la cumbre y es muy importante que esto este presente siempre en nuestras mentes.

Estoy muy feliz entonces de finalmente decirles que desde diciembre he estado trabajando como el Editor de una revista nueva llamada Gogo Magazine. La primera edición de la que formé parte sale esta semana y podrán comprarla en establecimientos como Farmacias Arrocha, Sanborns y Gran Morrison en todo Panamá.

Es una revista en la que tratamos temas muy variados para un público con mente joven y abierta que se interesa por el arte, la cultura, la ecología y los problemas sociales. También hay secciones de moda y estilo. Al final hay de todo para todos los gustos, espero puedan comprarla y que les guste; me muero por ver sus comentarios y si igualmente hay cosas que les gustaría cambiar no duden en decírmelas, la revista es de ustedes ;)

A couple of posts ago I began to mention “a job that I’d later explain more of”, well, the time has come.

Since I was a little potato I’ve read and collected magazines, I am seriously obsessed (not the white chick “I am obsessed with...” kind of obsessed) with glossies.

With that said, it wouldn’t be weird if my dream was being a magazine editor.

But we all know becoming a Vogue or Interview Magazine Editor is not an easy task, and it is also clear that you need a lot of previous knowledge before being in such position.

So Imma go straight to the point and share with you that I’ve started working as the EIC (editor in chief) of a new magazine called Gogo Magazine since December. It is a publication that brings to the table varied topics such as culture and art, social issues, sports, ecology and Green topics as well as great columnists and cool fashion sections for those who have a Young mind. If you ever get the chance to buy it (nationwide Farmacias Arrocha, Sanborns and Gran Morrison starting this weekend) do not hesitate and share your comments as well as suggestions and your constructive criticism with me through social networks, I will be glad to hear from you ;)

Siempre es bueno ir a seminarios, talleres y congresos. Ya sea para afianzar conocimientos o para adquirirlos, los seminarios también te sirven para conocer más gente del medio y obviamente hacer conexiones.

Esta es la segunda sesión organizada por Switch y Lateral, la misma hablaba de un tema muy cercano a lo que hago diariamente que es manejar mis redes sociales para poder mercadear el blog, con conocimientos bien básicos pude entonces absorber información mega útil para poner en práctica a la hora de crear contenido, la tercera sesión hablará de Coolhunting pero con un ángulo más hacia el retail, será el 19 de Octubre y si te interesa asistir aquí te dejo el link a el Fan Page de Lateral.

It is always good to attend seminars, workshops & congresses. Whether it’s in seek of new knowledge or just to reaffirm & refresh old data they can also work as excellent networking situations.

This is the second session organized by Lateral & Switch in which we learned more about all the craft of community managing digital media/platforms.
