Arriba podrás ver el video en el que colaboré con la gente de Red Bull, en él documentamos lo más que pudimos de Fashion Globe Trotter, un viaje en el recorrí gran parte de las capitales de la moda para reportar desde los Fashion Weeks a todas las personas por medio de mis redes sociales.

Above you will see the video that I collaborated with Red Bull, in it we documented the most of my month-long trip to some of the world’s fashion capitals to report to everyone through my social media outlets the best of every Fashion Week.

Estoy segurísimo que para estos momentos ya todos estamos hartos de los posts de Facebook, Twitter, Instagram y cualquier otra red social despidiéndose del 2013. Ya estamos en la segunda semana del 2014 y parece que hay gente que no lo supera.

Lamentablemente decir que he estado un poco desaparecido del blog es una sutileza pero todo en este mundo tiene su razón. A principios de diciembre comencé a sentirme muy enfermo y hace poco me diagnosticaron con cálculos biliares, por consiguiente no he tenido las energías para desempeñarme como el pendejo que usualmente soy.

Por eso también me ha tocado postear mi oficial au revoir 2013 hoy y no hace una semana:

Querido 2013, voy a evitar lo más posible ponerme emocional y dejar que todos sepan mis reales sentimientos, porque digo, nadie quiere saber en verdad lo suavenena que soy. Quiero decirte que de los 22 años de vida tu has sido mi favorito, no es por favoritismo ni escogencia a dedo, simple y sencillamente me abriste las puertas a nuevos lugares, nuevas personas y nuevas experiencias.

Contigo recorrí una vez más los recovecos subterráneos de una de mis ciudades preferidas, New York; conocí mi nuevo amor, Madrid; disfruté del Sol y de las rumbas de Barcelona y cumplí mis sueños de conocer Paris. Contigo conocí Las Vegas y contigo crecí como hombre y como ciudadano del mundo.

Gracias a ti aprendí un millón de cosas que tuve la oportunidad de compartir a través del blog y también fue por ti que terminé todas las materias de mi carrera universitaria, solamente quedando en espera que el maldito sistema burocrático de mi universidad se apresure a darme mis diplomas.

En resumen, 2013 you fucking rocked my boat!

En cuanto al 2014, digamos que mi decisión ha sido vivirlo con una sola palabra en mente: osado/a. Atreverse a lo impensable, salir de la bendita zona de confort y romper con la rutina. Comienzo el año con un nuevo trabajo del que pronto les estaré comentando y del que también quiero que formen parte.

Por el momento les digo hasta luego y nos vemos en las cómicas (exactamente como lo decía mi abuelito). BOOM!

It could be even a statement to say that most of us are very done with the “Goodbye 2013...” epidemic that recently took over every single social media outlet. While some of them were pretty fucking annoying, others were very accurate in expressing the caresses of passing from one year to the next one.

Then, it could be an understatement to say that I’ve been away from the blog a little bit. Having said that I have my reasons. At the beginnings of December I was stricken by a constant pain that was recently diagnosed as gallstones, which left me with no energies whatsoever, I couldn’t even make it to the desk, all I did during Christmas was recovering and reading, not even one ounce of alcohol.

Now that I feel so much better I have concocted a very special letter the year we just left behind:

Dear 2013, by all means I am going to avoid any tenderness and pussyness due to the fact that I’m a total macho-man and that all hints of weakness are not even included in my book. With that clear I just want to highlight how special you were to me; thanks to you I met so many new and interesting people, far-away places that I had only dreamt of and new experiences that are now written in my book of life.

You were my faithful companion in the MTA subway while I made my way to the SS14 fashion show and in those moments when I was too drunk to text you were the one that got me a taxicab so I could go weep to my friend’s house; you held my hand in those crazy Madrid nights when a guy showed me his dick and I just freaked out, let’s just say I wasn’t prepared for that; now I am madly in love with that city, not because of the dick, but because of its magnetic magic; you healed me when I broke my eyebrow while drunk-dancing in Barcelona (just kidding, the last thing I remember was my friend Andy pouring vodka on my face to cure the thing); and you were there when I cried like a baby because I finally made my dream of meeting face-to-face with Paris true.

2013, you were the first one that was with me when I attended WWD MAGIC/FN PLATFORM as the official blogger from Panama. Thanks to you I learned one million and a hundred things, which were then graciously (here comes the ego) shared through this amazing blog that God & Madonna created. Most importantly, in this year I finished all of my college-required subjects, all I need is to wait in order to be a graduated boy.

All in all dear 2013, you fucking rocked my boat!

Now onto 2014.

All I’m gonna say is that I have just one word that will describe the way I’m gonna take this year: daring. Starting the year with a new job I’m gonna be telling you of later.

For the moment this is only a “see-ya”. BOOM!

Elias Sarmiento FWPTY 2013

El año pasado Elias dejó algo muy claro: el ama vestir a mujeres con poder. Este poder no sólo tiene que ver con un valor numérico en una cuenta bancaria sino con el poder de la personalidad. Es muy obvio que no cualquier persona puede vestir los de Elias Sarmiento; el dramatismo y exuberancia de sus diseños necesitan de una mujer alfa para poder llevarlos, de otra forma puede que pase el caso de “el vestido vistiendo a la mujer.”

Sin embargo, en esta colección, Elias abrió una pequeña ventanita para esas mujeres que tal vez no quieran ser la protagonista pero que igual disfrutan del vestir bien y que tienen gusto. Las piezas clave de la colección fueron los vestidos de cocktail negros con injertos de encaje al igual que algunas piezas individuales como una falda lápiz fucsia que iba emparejada con un corpiño en color casi nude, conjunto perfecto para ir a la oficina.

Otro vestido que me llamó mucho la atención fue un vestido con falda globo con aplicaciones de cristales y lazos en la cintura. Este vestido me dice mucho por dos cosas: aparte de su buena hechura, es un diseño que puede ser utilizado por un amplio rango de edades, desde una niña de 15 años hasta una joven de 27 o 30, y segundo, su silueta me recordó muchísimo a un vestido de la colección primavera/verano 2005 de Alexander McQueen, It’s A Game, uno de mis diseños favoritos de Lee.

Una colección inspirada en el drama del amor y el romance nos deja la pregunta de si entonces tendrá un final feliz en el lado comercial. En comparación con su colección debut estamos seguros que Elias estará agregando más nombres a su clientela, solo esperamos que el próximo año todos podamos ser parte de ella.

Last year Elias sent a clear statement down the runway: he likes to dress powerful women. The word “power” in this formula doesn’t necessarily has to do with money or authority but more with personality and in the words of Evita, star quality.

Elias’ has been designing for a particular woman who likes drama and exuberance, which leaves a considerable gap for the audience who in some way would love to wear his designs.

This year that changed a little.

To our gratification, Elias presented a collection that’s more commercial driven that opens a little window for the women who may not be afraid to stand out; there were some cocktail dresses – specially the LBD’s, that really stood up for me, they were not only well-made but were versatile enough to enhance almost every body shape. Another dress that really caught my eye was a nude dress with a balloon skirt and crystal appliqués at the waist which somehow reminded me of that dress with the obi-style sash from the Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2005 “It’s A Game” collection.

Inspired by the drama of love and romance, we cannot tell right now if this collection is bound to be a commercial blockbuster but compared to Elias’ debut collection we’re pretty sure there are gonna be some additions to Sarmiento’s clientele, we just hope next year we can all be wearing his designs.

Judy e Yvonne Attie at #FWPTY 2013

Éste es un ejemplo claro de dos cosas: como la falta de atención a los detalles pueden arruinar el resultado final, y en una nota más positiva, como en un año calendario puede dar paso a la evolución.

Recuerdo la colección del año pasado que tenía un tema inspirado en muñecas y títeres. Recuerdo también no tener ni un solo comentario positivo de ella. Hacemos entonces fast-forward 365 días después (creo, usemos el sentido figurado) y mientras que hay muchos elementos que necesitan trabajo: selección de telas, styling, estudio de proporciones e investigación para la inspiración (no entiendo porque muchos diseñadores panameños se toman las “inspiraciones” muy a pecho y presentan colecciones tan literales que no dejan cabida al disfrute del público).

Sin embargo, a diferencia del año pasado, hubo piezas que fácilmente podían ser compradas al terminar la noche, por ejemplo: la capa/poncho con detalle en el hombro de el ojo que todo lo ve (yo la quiero),  la segunda salida que era un vestido de organza blanca y flecos en el pecho y la tercera salida, especialmente la falda con basta irregular. También me gustó mucho el uso de la simbología de los ojos, cosa que me recordó mucho a Kenzo, marca que adoro.

Con todo y que no estemos todavía ahí, se nota que hubo más trabajo que en la pasada versión de FWPTY.

This is a clear example of two things: how the negligence to details can ruin the overall outcome, and in a more positive note, how a year can help a designer to evolve.

I remember as if it was yesterday Attie’s first collection. I also remember having not even one positive comment about it. Then, fast forward 365 days (I believe it’s one year calendar) and while there are still some elements that need to be fixed: fabric selection (please, someone needs to help them), styling, proportions studies and the development of a concept (I don’t know why many Panamanian designers give the audience collections whose translation from its inspiration is too literal it leaves us with nothing to dream, digest or fantasize about), I also found that there were more pieces that could be sold right at the end of the night, for example: the poncho that had the beading that formed an eye on the shoulder, the second exit which was a chest-fringed organza dress and the third, specially the what-seemed-woven skirt with ornaments in the irregular hems. As a plus, I also loved the use of eyes, which reminded me of Kenzo.

Despite the fact that we’re still not there you can see that there was more work comparing to their last participation in FWPTY.

Leal Daccarett at #FWPTY 2013

Siempre es difícil ser el primero. Ya sea si somos los primeros en decir la charla en la escuela o el primero en hacer algo nunca antes hecho;  imagínense ahora ser el desfile que abre la Semana de la Moda en Panamá.

Pero en este caso no hubo nada de que preocuparse. La marca colombiana Leal Daccarett, fundada por Karen Daccarett y Francisco Leal en el 2006 fueron los que abrieron los 3 días más esperados por la industria de la moda de toda la región.

Con una colección que nos trajo a la mente los sabores coloridos y jugosos de Suramérica mezclando lo tradicional (bordados, trenzas en los cabellos, etc.) con la sofisticación (telas estructuras, cinturones semi-escondidos trabajados en piedrería á la Raf Simons para Dior) y las líneas exactas de vestidos de noche tenemos un buen comienzo de FWPTY.

Y si ya me conocen saben que una forma de ganarse mi corazón es con estampados y colores vibrantes, cosa que fue justamente el statement de la colección y si le agregas que también era la primera colección de zapatos de la marca terminamos con una ecuación que nos asegura que ésta será la primera vez de muchas otras que leeremos de esta pareja diseñadora.

It’s always hard to be the first one. The first one of your friends to sing at the karaoke, the first one to ask a question at a conference or the first one to take a chance, we get it, first times creep the fuck out of people, but if we see it the way Leal Daccarett did we are bound to a happy ending.

Leal Daccarett is a Colombian Brand founded in 2006 by Francisco Leal & his wife Karen Daccarett after they returned from Milan, where they attended Istituto Marangoni. They are now pretty well known designer back home in Bogotá but it was time to go international.

With a collection that evoked the juicy & colorful soul of South America they showed why Colombia is so respected in the region & even though I would have loved a Panamanian designer to open Fashion Week Panama I was very VERY pleased with the outcome.

Prints & colors are my thing and those were exactly the statements Leal Daccarett sent down the runway; complemented with a delicious use of embellishments (very Raf Simons for Dior) & fabrics that added depth to the contrast of traditional (woven & hand crafted cotton) and modern (crisp lined coats & jackets and sensual ruffles that gave the perfect feminine touch to exquisitely hand-painted pencil skirts).

Another “first time” worth mentioning is that this was also the first time the couple do shoes, which were a nice addition to the collection since they were paired up with another key item that even I covet, the earrings, earcuffs & bijoux. One thing we have to have certain is that this is also the first time we hear from these to but definitely not the last one ;)

Random Encounters/ Backstage at FWPTY

Ludovika

Mañana comienza Fashion Week Panamá. Con invitados internacionales desde modelos, diseñadores y prensa serán unos días muy ocupados para toda la industria de la moda de no sólo Panamá sino que Latinoamérica.

Aquí les presento a Ludovika Koch, una de las diseñadoras invitadas, ella tiene sólo 14 años y estará mostrando su nueva colección este sábado, espero ver a muchos de ustedes por allá y si me ven no duden en saludarme ;)

Tomorrow begins Fashion Week Panama. With international guests (models, designers & press) already arriving it’s gonna be one of the busiest weeks in Panama & why not, Latinamerica.

Here I introduce you to Ludovika Koch, a 14 year old girl that is debuting her new collection (yeah, you read it right) this Saturday so with this said I really hope to see some of you there & if you see me don’t hesitate on saying hello to me ;)
