PROFILE: Tiziana Serretta

“Cuando le dije a Stefano que venía a Panamá lo primero que me preguntó fue ‘¿y qué hay en Panamá?’ yo simplemente le dije – muchas cosas interesantes – “ me contaba Tiziana la primera noche que nos conocimos, y para aclarar las dudas, sí, se refería a Stefano Gabbana.

 Tiziana Serretta tal vez no sea un nombre que nos suene familiar para muchos panameños pero seguramente si lo sea para italianos/nas. Tiziana Serreta es considerada la decana por excelencia del coleccionismo de joyas y moda “vintage” en Italia y en el mundo.

Pero la joyería ni el diseño no siempre fueron el oficio de tiempo completo de Tiziana. Siguiendo la tradición familiar Tiziana terminó la carrera en leyes hasta el nivel universitario para después dedicarse a la procuraduría judicial y luego profesó derecho procesal en su ciudad natal de Palermo, Italia.

Su colección de joyas se fue haciendo cada vez más ambiciosa hasta tal punto que en el 1992 abre su propia galería, mismo año en el cual participa en la Bienal de Florencia.

Siendo una ávida coleccionista de joyas de casas europeas como Bulgari, Cazzaniga, Boucheron, Grima, Sterle’, Blyth así como de maisons americanas como Van Cleef & Webb también tiene en su ajuar diseños exclusivos de Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau y muchos otros artistas, la gran mayoría de estas piezas son únicas, razón que hace de Tiziana un punto pivotal para museos y curadores de renombre mundial.

Pero ¿qué sería de una hermosa joya sin un espectacular vestido? Serreta ha sabido apreciar el talento de couturiers como yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Elsa Schiaparelli, Madeleine Vionnet, Pierre Cardin, Paco Rabanne, Courréges y ha también compilado una impresionante colección de más de 7000 vestidos vintage, lo que la convierte quizás en una de las primeras personas en el mundo en prever el devenir de lo “vintage”.

El segundo día me reúno con Tiziana y con Marisa Midolo para almuerzo en Salsípuedes, el tema de discusión es el nuevo proyecto de Tiziana, un proyecto que planea mezclar el arte, el diseño, la arquitectura y el glamour en uno solo y que tendrá sus primeros pasos aquí en la Ciudad de Panamá. Un proyecto que busca no sólo trabajar con artistas jóvenes y talentosos de Panamá sino que también planteará una nueva modalidad de ver el arte y el diseño en Latinoamérica.

Luego de almorzar subimos a la habitación de Tiziana donde mi principal objetivo era descubrir las piezas que vestiría durante su estadía, a lo que me encontré con una perfecta selección de Fendi, Yves Saint Laurent y accesorios de marcas como Gucci y Lanvin que datan tanto de los años 50s como de los 60s.

Tiziana es una inspiración para el mundo de la moda y del arte, con una personalidad cálida e invitante y con un espíritu joven y siempre en busca de nuevas y emocionantes experiencias – prueba de ello es un tatuaje que tiene en la nuca, el cual es el resultado de una noche de diversión que tuvo con sus amigas de juventud – estoy seguro que Tiziana será bienvenida en nuestro país cuantas veces quiera, de mi parte ya tiene una invitación a mi casa a tomar té ;)

“When I told Stefano that I was coming to Panama, the first thing he asked was ‘What’s going on in Panama?’, I just answered ‘a lot of interesting things’” said Tiziana the first night we met for drinks, & just to clear the air, yes, it was Stefano Gabbana she was referring to.

Tiziana Serretta may not be a name that rings a lot of bells in the panamanian audience but it surely does in the Italian artistic & fashion scene due to the fact that she is considered the dean of fine jewelry & vintage couture around the world.

Although during her early professional years Law was her everything –she graduated from law school because of family traditions, she even taught at the attorney’s general office back in her hometown of Palermo, Italy -she now has her career as Collector, Historian & Designer as her whole-.

Her now worldly famous collection of jewels includes precious pieces by European brands such as Bulgari, Cazzaniga, Boucheron, Grima, Sterle’, Blyth as well as American top jewelers Van Cleef & David Webb. Tiziana also enjoys one-of-a-kind designs, example of this are the pieces she’s collected through the years by renowned artist from the like of Andy Warhol, Jean Cocteau, Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, who have designed pieces for her, making Tiziana a pivotal axis for curators & museums around the world.

But what would a fine jewel be without a gorgeous dress? Serretta is also passionate towards the creations of classical couturiers like Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Elsa Schiaparelli, Madeleine Vionnet, Pierre Cardin, Paco Rabanne, Courreges which have made a total of more than 7000 pieces, a hugely impressive number for a collection of vintage clothing.

The second day I got together with Tiziana & Marissa Midolo at Salsipuedesfor lunch, in the table the discussion surrounded Tiziana’s latest project, Arts, a project that will start in Panama & will look for the perfect blend of art, design, architecture & glamour. Arts will be entirely driven by young talent from Panamanians or residents in the country & will obviously show the Latin-American people a new way to appreciate the arts, through glamorous concepts & innovative modalities.

After the dejeuner we went upstair to see part of the collection Tiziana had brought to Panama just for the 2 days she stayed here to attend the launching of the Panama Film Festival. Being a huge fan of Yves Saint Laurent – Tiziana says that no one made dresses like him- she is also devoted to Italian brands such as Prada, Fendi & Gucci –proof of that is the entire closet full of Fendi clothing & the collection of purses & Gucci and Lanvin mini audieres dated back to 1950-.

Tiziana is an inspiration for the world of fashion & arts. With a warm & welcoming personality that exudes youth –she even has a tattoo on her nape, which was the result of a crazy night with her friends- I am sure she will make a big impression in Panama & we can’t wait to see more from her.
