Chanel Puts It On The Ritz

Shanghai, Edinburgh, Dallas and even Salzburg. All these cities have something that binds them: Chanel métiers d'art.

The Métiers d'Art collections are normally presented outside of the average fashion calendar (although that coincide perfectly with the Pre-Fall collections) and their goal is mainly to celebrate the savoir-faire of the maison and the hands that have sewn every single thread of its history.

Criticized many times for its outlandishness - that many say are just to put away the attention to the lack of perspective on the clothes, which translates in exhausting collections of repetitive looks that go up to 100 exits - these events are married also with incredible locations (Mumbai in 2012, Edinburgh in 2013, Dallas in 2014, Salzburg in 2015 and Rome in early 2016), to which only top clients and international editors are invited, flown and feted.

Each one of these exotic locations aren’t chosen randomly, Uncle Karl selects them because in theory they represent a moment in Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s life. An example would be the Pre-Fall Dallas collection in 2014. Texas’ capital is significant to the brands heritage because, in 1957, when Gabrielle faced rejection from the French with her 1954 collection, Neiman Marcus’ Stanley Marcus was the one who offered her shelter and even prized her with the Award for Distinguished Services in the fashion sphere, same award that Karl received on 2014.

For this upcoming Pre-Fall 2017 the maison’s savoir-faire will stay closer at home and will be presented at one of the world’s most luxurious hotels: Paris’ Ritz Hotel at the Place Vendôme, same hotel that served as Gabrielle’s home for more than three decades, and which still has managed to keep that same suite – room that you can book for the modest Price of 18,000 euros per night according to the hotel’s website.

The show could not only be considered as a great economic movement for the brand (let’s just consider all the money that will be saved taking in account all of the French clients and editors who will not be in need to be flown, and the low cost of flights for all of the other European guests), it can also be a great boom for the French capital who’s been under a lot of pressure since the terrorist attacks of November 2015 – according to WWD the city of Paris stands to lose as much as 1.58 billion euros in tourist revenues this year.

Not a stranger to extravagance, I’m pretty sure that even though having a predisposed location, Karl will manage to give us a good show, a show that will surely outshine a hotel whose renovation price was 400 million euros.
