Within the clothing industry this term is typically used as an abbreviation of "cellulose acetate", a material produced by treating cellulose (obtained from cotton or wood pulp) with acetic acid & acetic anhydride. Acetate fabrics, of which there are a variety, are versatile, drape well, retain their shape during washing and drying, and show good resistance to wrinkles and stains. However, they are relatively weak and inelastic.

Fashion A to Z: Acetate
