Imagínense los 4
elementos – agua, fuego, aire y tierra – luchando entre ellos en un solo
escenario, saltando de trampolín a trampolín mientras que un personaje, Little Buddha vuela por los aires simbolizando
el viaje del Este a el Oeste de Asia. Suena súper estimulante para la vista y
para los sentidos - también para el oído ya que hay banda en vivo – pero
centrémonos en lo visual.
El día de ayer a pesar
del tranque descomunal que había en el área de Ancón pude llegar a tiempo a la
práctica de Cirque du Soleil Dralion (Dralion es una fusión de Dragon, que
simboliza el Este y Lion el Oeste), un show producido casi 100% en Montreal,
Canadá y que hoy estrena en suelo panameño.
Siendo un mega fan de
los espectáculos y de los musicales y de las artes dramáticas en general, era
una obligación para mí conocer a Melody Wood, la Directora de Vestuario del
show que ha estado recorriendo el mundo desde hace ya mucho tiempo.

Imagine the 4 elements – water, fire, air & earth –
fighting while jumping & flying across the stage while a Little Buddha
travels to become the forcé all in a show that captures the best of West &
East Asia. Sound amazingly appealing to the eye.
Yesterday, in the middle of all the traffic that was
caused by all the mishappenings in Panama I made it to the practice of Cirque
du Soleil Dralion (Dralion is the mix of Dragon, which simbolizes the East
& Lion, which simbolizes de West), a show almost 100% produced in Montreal,
Canada & which its opening night is tonight here in Panama.
Being a huge fan of shows & spectacles it was a
must for me to interview Melody Wood, the Director de Costume of the show.

Siendo una veterana en
su materia, Melody estudió Costume Design en el Central School of Speech &
Drama en Londres y ha sido parte del show de Cirque du Soleil desde hace ya 2
años y medio, aunque confiesa haber querido ser parte del mismo desde hace 5
años.
Bajo su manga cuenta con
una carrera impresionante que comenzó como vestuarista del Disney Cruise Line,
en donde trabajo por 3 años y medio donde confiesa haber iniciado su amor por
Mickey Mouse, luego de ahí formó parte del West End en Londres (el Broadway de
Europa) en donde trabajó en musicales como El Zorro, Lion King, Porgy &
Bess, Violinista en el Tejado y como gran highlight de su carrera, el show del
aniversario número 25 de Les Misérables.
Ahora Melody es la Directora
de todo el departamento de vestuario –el cual incluye maquillaje y peinado- de
Dralion. Responsable de cerca de 3000 piezas de vestuario – desde bandanas,
brazaletes hasta zapatos y sombreros- Melody cuenta que su función más que nada
es la de mantener cada una de las piezas en óptima condición para el artista,
para ésto cuenta con 4 costureras permanentes y 3 costureras que contratan en
cada una de las ciudades a las que van en su equipo.

A veteran in her craft, Melody Wood started it all
since the early age of 7 when she first went to a musical, from then she knew
exactly what she wanted to be as a grown up. Her studies as Puppetier &
Costume Designer at the Central School of Speech & Design cemented her
career which started at the Disney Cruise Line, where she was the one in charge
of Mickey Mouse, she then went back to her hometown, London where she had
amazing years at the West End (the Broadway of Europe).
There she worked behind the scenes of big musicals
such as Lion King, The Zorro, Porgy & Bess, Fiddler in the Roof & she
even worked at the celebrated 25th Anniversary Show of Les Misérables, a huge
milestone in her career where she even worked with original painting made by
Victor Hugo himself.
Now Melody is in charge of a production of more than
3000 pieces, even though her title says she’s the Director she confesses her
tasks are more of a maintainer, that’s why her department is made of her &
4 permanent seamstresses & 3 local ones from each country they visit.

El 75% de los vestuarios
es personalizado –los vestuarios son en su mayoría originalmente hechos en una
tela nude que luego es pintada a mano- y los 300 pares de zapatos con los que
cuentan – desde trainers, high tops hasta zapatos de cuero- son hechos a medida
para cada uno de los artistas y a pesar de contar con herramientas digitales y
tecnológicas para hacer, pintar y diseñar cada uno de los vestuarios Melody
sabe que no hay comparación a la exclusividad de una pieza hecha y diseñada a
mano.
Podrán imaginarse
entonces la gran cantidad de trabajo que implica hacer cada uno de los
vestuarios que podrán ver en el escenario; cada uno de ellos tomaron de 40 a
100 horas de producción, proceso que comienza desde que se le toman todas las
medidas al artista – medidas de rostro, cuerpo entero, piernas, pies y se
realiza un color test de cada uno para empatar las telas que son transparentes.
Cada artista cuenta con máximo
5 outfits, cada uno compuesto por hasta 8 piezas. Durante el show también es
muy curioso ver la variedad de materiales que han sido utilizados en la
composición de los outfits así como la gran cantidad de técnicas artesanales utilizadas
que tal vez no serán apreciadas desde la audiencia pero que valen la pena
resaltar.

75% of all the costumes are customized – most of them
come just in a nude fabric which is then hand painted -; they also carry 300
pairs of shoes, from trainers, high tops to leather shoes, all of them made
specially for each & every of the artists. Even though they have the
opportunity to work digitally every costume Melody knows the difference that
makes a customized piece.
You can now imagine the huge amount of work over
Melody’s shoulders. She was also involved in the creation process back in
Montreal, where she explains that every costume took up to 100 hours of making,
JUST ONE! As supposed this production start from scratch & also involves
the artista, which is measured – face, body, legs, feet - & color tested
for skin-meshed outfits.
The show is made of 13 acts in which each artista counts
on 5 outfits, each of them composed by up to 8 pieces – from bracelets to
bodysuits – being a very colorful show that blends the asian cultures perfectly
is no surprise the use of a huge range of materials & artisanal techniques
that may not be seen from the audience but are there to enrich the show in a
subtle way.
Al preguntarle cual es
su personaje favorito Melody obviamente dice que es muy difícil elegir uno solo
de toda la compañía pero si confiesa que Océane es un personaje que le gusta
mucho ya que su vestuario está compuesto por elementos hechos de cristales,
Styrofoam, plástico y hasta Slinkies, lo que convierte a este personaje en uno
de los favoritos de la audiencia por su vistosidad.
Otra gran parte del
trabajo de Melody y su departamento es el lavado de los vestuarios, la compañía
viaja a cada país con 6 lavadoras y 2 máquinas de lavado en seco y cada día de
6 a 7 cargas de ropa son lavadas, secadas y supervisadas para evitar cualquier
tipo de accidente en escena.
No es un trabajo fácil
pero es muy gratificante, por lo menos para Melody no hay nada que la haga más
feliz que ver las reacciones del público y oír sus comentarios, por más cliché
que suene. También dice que si te quieres dedicar al vestuarismo es clave que
tengas habilidad de reaccionar rápido a las cosas y ser muy observador – tienes
que darte cuenta de problemas como botones, costuras, etc. enseguida – así como
también debes tener empatía por los actores y artistas, los cuales muchas veces
llegan a ella en el personaje lo que hace mucho más difícil y confuso el
trabajo como Directora de Vestuario.
When asked about her favorite character Melody cannot
decide from all the 50 international artists that are Cirque du Soleil’s
Dralion but she confesses that she loves Océane, a character inspired by obvs
the ocean & that most of the times is dressed in a mixture of materials
that make her one of the most shiny characters costume-wise, her outfits
include materials like: crystals, Styrofoam, plastic & even Slinkies.
Aside from sewing, repairing, painting & renovating
the costumes Melody’s responsibility is also to make sure the clothes are clean
for each show, for this, the company travels with 6 washing machines & 2
dry tumblers, each day up to 7 loads of laundry are cleaned, dried &
checked just in case a minor rapture or gap is made.
It is not an easy job as Melody says but it is very
rewarding, as cheesy as it may sound Melody is proud to say that there’s
nothing like seeing the gratitude & joy in the faces of the audience. As it
for any advice just in case you are interested in working in Wardrobe &
Costume she recommends you to have a quick eye & great reflexes, you have
to be very keen of details – spotting loose buttons, seams & lost beading
is a must - & above it all having empathy with the actors, which may be
hard to work with in some cases – she recalls an occasion in which the actor
came to a fitting in the character making it extra confusing & difficult
for her.

Después de haber visto
todo el trabajo que toma presentar un show como Cirque du Soleil Dralion les
digo que vale la pena ir a ver el show, no sólo por las acrobacias, por la
música ni por los vestuarios, sino porque es Cirque du Soleil, es el Gucci y
Prada de los shows y créanme que tenerlo en Panamá es una oportunidad que no
debemos dejar pasar. Después me cuentan que les pareció ;)
After
seeing & experiencing the backstage life of Cirque du Soleil Dralion &
just want to say that this is a must-see show, not just because of the amazing
stunts, the music & the beautiful costumes, it’s Cirque du Soleil man, the
Gucci & Prada of circus shows & believe me, having it in Panama is a
chance that you cannot miss ;)
