Según la Real Academia de la Lengua Española una sub-cultura es un término utilizado en sociología, antropología y semiótica cultural para definir un grupo de personas con un conjunto distintivo de comportamientos y creencias que los diferencia de la cultura dominante de la que forman parte.

Las cualidades que determinan que una subcultura se lleve a cabo pueden ser estéticas, políticas, religiosas, de identidad sexual o en muchos casos una combinación de todos estos aspectos. Debido a la proliferación de ideologías y al pseudo-individualismo abundante en nuestra sociedad se puede considerar como sub-cultura hasta al mismo catolicismo pero hay una sub-cultura en la que me quiero concentrar en esta ocasión.

According to the Thesaurus Dictionary a subculture is a term used in sociology, anthropology & cultural semiotic to define a group of people who share a distinctive mannerism & system of beliefs that set them apart from the dominant culture they are part of. 

The qualities that make a subculture happen can be either aesthetic, political, religious or based on sexual identity, in many cases it is a mix of all of the above. Due to the proliferation of ideologies & the pseudo-individualism that's abundant in our youth & generation even Catholicism is considered a sub-culture but today we're focusing in one specifically.

El poster de la exhibición de este año del Costume Institute + MET celebrando el Punk y su influencia en décadas de moda.  

The poster of the Costume Institute + MET exhibition celebrating Punk’s influence in decades of fashion. 

Originada en Estados Unidos, reino Unido y Australia a mediados de lo 70 muchos expertos han denominado a esta sub-cultura como un bricolage de corrientes que se remontan a la Segunda Guerra Mundial como también el arte moderno que reinaba en la época. Musicalmente el Punk ha tenido muchas fases para llegar a ser lo que conocemos hoy gracias al nihilismo de Sex Pistols o el feminismo de The Runaways. Con una evolución que dio sus primeros pasos en las cuerdas del garage rock, pub rock, el metal y el folk rock la música punk ha podido influenciar géneros más actuales el New Wave o el Pop Punk.

En el campo de la moda es casi seguro que todos tenemos una sola imagen que se nos viene a la mente al hablar de Punk que es la de spikes, cuero, franelas rotas y combat boots, sin mencionar los mohawks de colores llamativos pero todo esto también tiene su origen que se adjudican a diseñadores como Vivienne Westwood y Jean Paul Gaultier y bandas como The Exploited. Como dato curioso la juventud Punk de los años 70 y 80 son los padres del DIY ya que fueron los primeros en reparar sus ropas rotas y vintage con imperdibles, tape o materiales de elastano.

A pesar de que en Panamá no tenemos una cultura Punk per-se definitivamente hemos sido influenciados por la cultura Punk norteamericana (para variar) y para hacer este post mucho más interesante (avísenme si el “mucho más” esta de sobra y el post es solamente “interesante” ahahhahaa) me acerqué a amigos y colegas que de alguna manera se han visto parte del movimiento Punk o tal vez simplemente son admiradores y se han visto inspirados por ella.

Born in the late 1970 (and early 80s) of USA, UK & Australia Punk is considered a bricolage of every youth culture since World War II. 

Music is a huge part of Punk culture. Its evolution has had so many phases until it reached Sex Pistols' nihilism or the grunge feminism of The Runaways, it all started in the garages of american youths with garage rock, which grew into pub rock, metal & folk rock, the most contemporary stages of Punk are New Wave or Pop Punk. 

Fashion wise Punk has also had a tremendous impact on today's culture (Christophe Decarnin SPring/Summer 2011 Balmain collection & all of Lady Westwood creations hello!!), immediately when we think of Punk fashion spikes, leather & ripped of tees & Dr. Martens boots come to our minds -not even mentioning the crazy mohawks. The origins of Punk fashion have had their origins in the streets of UK with the help of the Dame Vivienne Westwood, les rues français with Jean Paul Gaultier & in the streets of New York & Boston with grunge bands in the background such as The Exploited. 

As a fun fact, Punks are the Greek Gods of DIYs, they were the first in modern fashion culture to customize & re style their clothes with safety pins, duck tape & rubber.

Despite the fact that Panama doesn't have an official Punk culture we surely have been influenced by it & just in the spirit of journalism I approached some friends & colleagues that have been somehow inspired or struck by the Punk movement & have interpreted it in their own hands.

¿Qué influye en tu estilo personal?/ Mi estilo es influenciado primero por mi humor, imágenes mentales e impulsos. A veces soy un personaje de un videojuego de pelea, una espía internacional y a veces soy un chiquillo malcriado.

Me gusta algo de todos los estilos y cuando puedo lo integro en lo que me pongo cada día pero todo depende del humor o personaje que tengo en mente, porque vestirme muchas veces se siente como convertirse en un personaje.

What influences your personal style?/ My style is primarily influenced by how I’m feeling, also by the mental imagery or impulses I’m having that day. Sometimes it all just comes down to becoming a character, I can be a character from Mortal Kombat or an international secret agent r I can just be a mischievous little brat.

I like to grasp every single style & merge it into what I want to wear but as I said, it all depends on my humor & the character I have in mind.

¿Qué es punk para ti?/ El punk es una ideología, una manera de ser y vivir. Para mí, el punk es no limitar tu persona a vivir bajo los términos de los que la sociedad considera “normal”, es vivir con total libertad de expresión, no conformarse con lo que las masas imponen y ser siempre honesto contigo mismo de acuerdo tus criterios e ideales.

Si hablamos de moda simplemente es vestirme como a uno le place, por ejemplo, la sociedad le ha establecido a la mujer el canon de que la única manera de lucir “bonita o femenina” es con tacones, ropa ajustada y un cabello y maquillaje “sexy”, pero no se necesitan esas cosas para definirse ,no hay nada mejor como una mujer con carácter y personalidad.

What is punk for you?/ Punk is all about the ideology of living by your own beliefs & terms. Society has set limitations of what is “normal” and what is not, but sometimes abnormal is the new normal. Punk is about expressing yourself & not letting the thoughts of the masses get in your way.

If we talk about how punk’s influenced fashion, for me, is wearing what you want where you want when you want, sadly, society has limited women to that canon that you cannot be pretty or sexy if you’re not wearing heels, tight dresses & makeup or a hair that would make Taylor Swift proud, you don’t need all of that to define yourself, there’s nothing like a woman that stands for herself with personality & courage.

Punk o no punk todos al final hemos sido influenciados por este movimiento, tengas puestos unos pumps con tachuelas o unas combat boots, unos ripped off jeans o un leather jacket, no temas en canalizar tu lado Punk & recuerda, “God Save the Queen” – en mi caso obviamente estoy hablando de Madonna.

Punk or no punk we all a rebel inside, whether you’re sporting studded 6 inch heels pumps or Dr. Martens combat boots or a pair of ripped off jeans or maybe a leather jacket full of zippers & safety pins don’t be afraid to cannel your Punk side & always remember “God Save the Queen” – I am obviously talking about Madonna you creep!.
