Trend Report: Hard Deco

Hace rato que no hacia un post de los elaborados de los que me pasaba dias investigando para poder escribirles algo decente y digno de leer, que cosa que justamente el penúltimo día del año fue el día en que decidí hacerlo.

Y sinceramente, para mi ha sido justo y necesario hacer éste post en específico. En la última S/S 2012 temporada hubo una tendencia que me llamo mucho la atención (mucho es poco). Estoy seguro que muchos de ustedes han ya notado un cierto sentimiento de nostalgia en las colecciones presentadas mas o menos 8 temporadas pasadas (F/W 2009 si no me equivoco).

Desde entonces, hemos visto un tour de force tan ecléctico que una máquina del tiempo se queda pequeña al lado de él. Años 50, el MOD de los 60, y de vuelta a la los estilos liberales de la post-primera-guerra-mundial y el intermedio entre la Gran Depresión.

El Art Deco es una de esas tendencias artísticas que dejó marca en tanto aspectos sociales como culturales. El mismo comenzó en Paris en los años 20 y floreció mundialmente en los años 30. Se desarrolló en áreas como la arquitectura (Chrysler Building & el City Hall, ambos en New York) hasta en la cinematografía.

Como toda corriente artística, tiene sus origenes en otras corrientes precursoras, como el Neoclacisismo, Constructivismo, Cubismo y el Modernismo. Se origina principalmente en la simetría de las figuras geométricas y el rigor de culturas antiguas como la babilóniica, egipcia, azteca y asiria.

It’s been a long time since I wrote my last trend report. Coincidence that I’m writing this during the penultimate day of the 2011. It was necessary for me to report this trend cause I’ve seen so much walking down the runways & because of time I had no chance to write about it, it was kind of frustrating, to tell you the truth.

I couldn’t help but notice the nostalgic appeal some designers have been showing these past collections, starting more or less 8 seasons ago (specifically during F/W 2009). We have been part of a tour de force that makes a time machine look like an old microwave. Going from the ladylike 50’s, the MOD of the 60’s & back to the liberal style of the 20’s & 30’s, time called the fresh-air taken between the smoke of WW1 & WW2 & The Great Depression.

Art Deco was one of those artistic movements that made a social & cultural impact & here comes the approach that really made my eye pop (it has always), how fashion can make such a big impact in society.

Los años 20 fueron marcados por la liberación de la mujer, economía venidera & grandes avances tecnológicos, todo ésto llevo a un nuevo modo de vida de lujos & modernismo progresivo. Estos dos aspectos son los que han enmarcado uno de los grandes canones de la mujer Deco: The Flapper.

Como les dije arriba, la moda en ésta época hizo un cambio muy grande en la sociedad & viceversa, los nuevos estilos al vestir se vieron inmensamente influenciados en grandes pasos en los derechos de la mujer, por ejemplo, durante los años 20 & 30, muchos países abrieron las ventanas de voto a la mujer (USA, Italia, Inglaterra, Brasil, España, etc.)

Durante la 1era Guerra Mundial muchos hombres tuvieron que partir a las trincheras de guerra, mientras tanto, una gran cantidad de mujeres tuvieron que tomar el rol de monarcas de la familia y salir a ganar dinero trabajando. Lo que acabo en que la mujer dejó su imagen tradicional y se rebeló hacia una identidad mucho más femenina y atrevida.

Las mujeres subieron los niveles de sus faldas y se armaron con licencia propia, de modo que ya no dependian de los hombres para ir a hacer mandados ni diligencias, shopping incluido obviamente. Y aqui es donde entra nuestra chica Flapper.

Hay muchas características de la moda Flapper, se puede mencionar que habia una silueta algo andrógina por asi decirlo, ya que no habia definición de busto, cero curvas, los vestidos llegaban a media pantorrilla o a la rodilla, formando entonces una silueta tubular, aparecieron los Cloches, los flecos dieron su primera aparición en ésta época, formas angulares en los vestidos y medias bajas, nada de pantimedias.

Como te dije, usa alguna de estos estilos y acomódalo a tu cuerpo y a tu estilo personal, no creo que quieras salir de tu casa viéndote como Mata Hari o Mae West, sería el peor de los casos! Ya mil veces hemos escuchado que la moda se trata sobre divertirse y digo, estamos en los últimos días del 2011, listos para recibir nuestro último año en la Tierra antes que el mundo se acabe y terminemos rostizados en el centro del planeta, asi que diversión debería ser la primera cosa que debes tener en mente!

The 20’s was framed by women’s liberation, prosperous economy & great advances in technology, all of this brought a new type of lifestyle of luxury hedonism & progressive modernism. Both of these aspects were the ones that entitled one of the biggest fashion characters : The Flapper.

As I told you, what I love the most about this trend for 2012 is the parallelism that it had with the 20’s, big changes are coming to surface our times (gay rights, political & environmental & the so-talked End of the World), changes that resonate the issues that were being treated at the time, women’s rights, for example, many countries were opening opportunities for voting for women such as Spain, Brazil, USA, England, Italy, etc.

During WW1 many heads of family had to part away to the war trenches & in many cases, loose their lives just to defend a flag, meanwhile, back at home, women were obliged to take the bulls by the horns & take charge of bourgeoisie & their families, thing that contributed to the freedom & rebellion of traditional canons by which the women had always been seen. Revealing a more feminine, seductive & edgy identity to the female figure.

Hemlines went up & licenses were accepted for women, that way they could go to work & run errand without masculine permission, obviously, shopping was included, & here is where our Flapper girl enters the scene.

Between the so many characteristics of the Flapper style, I will mention the ones that are most easy to acknowledge & imitate in our days without looking like girl that had the Halloween-party-date mistaken. Androgyny was present those days (not in the Andrej Pejic form though…), the dresses didn’t accentuate boobs nor hips nor waist at all, in contrast to the ladylike trends that were been worn in the years behind, the dresses reach mid-calf & in other cases, the knee, forming then a tubular silhouette , cloches made their first appearances & fringe came out to stay, angular shapes in dresses & rolled down stocking was the hot thing to do.

Like I told you, use some of these styles & accommodate them to your body shape & personal style, you wouldn’t want to go out of your house looking like Mata Hari or Mae West, in the worst of cases. Fashion is about fun so HAVE FUN WITH IT, I mean we are in the last days of 2011, ready to welcome our last year on Earth before been grilled by a meteorite (how dramatic can I be!?) fun must be the thing to do!

So have yourself a splendid New Year’s Eve, kiss someone, drink a lot of champagne & enjoy yourself!
