Trou Noir: PROFILE/ Kelly Talamas

Levantarse temprano no es uno de mis talentos. Aprenderme los nombres de personas y de lugares en general tampoco lo es, tal vez no sea bueno ni buscando café ni consiguiendo el manuscrito del último libro de Harry Potter (¿captaron la referencia que les tiré ahí?) pero de algo que si estoy seguro es que desde pequeño crecí para algún día trabajar en una revista de moda.

Yo se que suena súper cliché y que probablemente sea el sueño de mil y un personas dentro de un perímetro de 100 km de donde estoy escribiendo estas palabras, pero nada me va a quitar la ilusión de que en un futuro mi dirección de trabajo será 4 Times Square, New York, NY 10036 (Condé Nast Building) o cualquier otra oficina en la isla de Manhattan (o París, o Londres, tampoco nos pongamos exclusivos!).

Por eso cuando logré conseguir la cita para tener una conversación personal con Kelly Talamas, Directora Editorial de Vogue México & Latinoamérica, que a tan solo 29 años ha logrado establecerse como la cabeza de la moda latinoamericana.

En lo que fueron unos 20 minutos de conversación chévere y relajada quise darles a conocer su verdadera persona ya que me habían dicho que era una mujer muy sencilla, humilde y fácil de tratar, el total opuesto de una tal Anna Wintour.

Waking up early is not one of my talents. Memorizing the guestlist for an exclusive gala may not be one [talent] either, I would probably fail if I was asked somehow manage to get a hold onto the just-written manuscript of the not-even-published Harry Potter book (see what I did there?), but one thing I am completely sure is that I was born to work in the publishing world of fashion.

So when I finally got the opportunity to interview Kelly Talamas, the Editor in Chief of Vogue Mexico & Latinamerica, I got so excited that yesterday I woke up at 7 am (which is like REALLY early for me).

In what was 20 minutos of cool, relaxed one-on-one conversation I had the chance to get to know a woman who’s extremely passionate about what her north in life is, fashion.

1. ¿Quién es Kelly Talamas?

R: Primero que todo soy la Directora Editorial de Vogue México y Latinoamérica, soy una mujer muy apasionada por la moda, la música, la cultura y soy muy dedicada, me encanta viajar y considero que he llegado a un punto que disfruto y me divierto tanto con mi trabajo que ya no se siente como trabajo.

// Who is Kelly Talamas?

R: First & foremost I am the Editorial Director of Vogue Mexico & Latinamerica. I’m a woman who feels very passionate towards my work, which is fashion but also music & culture. I am very dedicated to my job to the point that I enjoy it so much it doesn’t feel like work anymore.

2. Y ¿cómo era Kelly de niña? ¿Siempre supiste que querías trabajar en la industria de la moda?

R: Desde pequeñita supe que quería trabajar en moda. Recuerdo claro que mis amigas siempre estaban indecisas sobre lo que querían estudiar y a lo que querían dedicarse pero como crecí leyendo revistas siempre tuve claro mi norte.

// But, how was Kelly as a child? Did you always know that you wanted to work in the fashion industry?

R: Ever since I was a little girl I knew I wanted to be involved in this world. I clearly remember when I graduated from high school & all of my friends didn’t even know what they wanted to do or be, so I kind of had the advantage of knowing my north.

3. ¿Cuál fue tu primer trabajo?

R: Después que me gradué trabajé en Ocean Drive, una revista de Miami, como te dije siempre me ha interesado el mundo editorial ;)

// What was your first job?

R: After I graduated I started working at Ocean Drive, a Miami based magazine, as I told you, I’ve always been attracted to the editorial world.

4. Describe brevemente el trabajo de una Editora en Jefe o en tu caso, Directora Editorial.

R: Es un trabajo bien extenso ya que los editores en jefe tenemos que encargarnos de darle dirección a la revista, desde supervisar los layouts, crear conceptos y proyectos, escoger los temas y orquestarlos, nos encargarnos de las producciones de moda y ahora con el devenir digital hemos entrado en una nueva era en la que estamos prontos a lanzar una aplicación para tablets y smartphones, la cual estoy también dirigiendo.

Incluye muchos viajes para eventos, tal y como Vogue en Vivo ahora tendremos Mexico Fashion Night Out & muchos más proyectos a los que debo asistir. Por suerte me encanta viajar!

// What’s your job description as Editor in Chief of Vogue Mexico & Latinamerica?

R: It’s a very intense job due to the fact that we, as editors in chief, have the responsibility of giving a direction & soul to the magazine. We have to supervise the layouts, create concepts & projects, choose features & trending topics, also we have to take charge of the productions that are inside the magazine. Now that the digital world is taking over we’re even launching an app for tablets & smartphones, that’s another project that I have to work on.

You have to also give away a lot of your time for traveling, especially to events & meetings, events such as Vogue en Vivo are the ones we support.

5. ¿Recuerdas cómo fue tu primer día como Directora Editorial de Vogue México & Latinoamérica?

R: Fue fuerte! Es algo de no parar!

// How was your first day as the Editor in Chief of Vogue Mexico & Latinamerica?

R: It was pretty intense; it’s a job that never stops.

6. ¿Hay alguna otra publicación que admiras o tomas como referencia?

R: Me gusta mucho Vanity Fair porque trata temas muy variados, desde política hasta cultura. También me gusta leer revistas musicales como Rolling Stones porque me apasiona mucho la música.

// Are there any other publications & magazines that you admire or look up to?

R: I really enjoy reading the pages of Vanity Fair because they offer a variety of topics throughout the magazine, from politics to culture. I also like music magazines the like of Rolling Stones.

7. ¿Ser tan joven ha representado algún tipo de reto ante la magnitud de tu profesión?

R: La verdad es que no, ser Director o Directora Editorial de una revista como Vogue creo que es un reto para cualquier edad ;)

// Has it been challenging managing & editing a magazine like Vogue at such a Young age?

R: Actually not, I think this position would be challenging for all ages.

8. ¿Cuál ha sido la entrevista o personaje que has entrevista que te ha marcado más hasta el sol de hoy?

R: De todas creo que la que más me ha llamado la atención y que más recuerdo fue a Haider Ackermann por el solo hecho de que él mismo es un personaje enigmático, misterioso y reservado así que solamente el poder haber tenido la oportunidad de entrevistarlo fue mucho, aparte de que es un diseñador de primera categoría.

// Which interview or who has been the character that has impressed you the most to date?

R: From all the interviews that I’ve done I think the one that was more of an impact & made such a strong memory in me was the one I did with Haider Ackermann, not only because of his masterful designs & the fact that he’s one of the top designer right now but because he is mysterious, enigmatic & very reserved so I feel happy that I could meet him.

9. Ya has estudiado periodismo & economía pero ¿hay alguna otra carrera que te gustaría completar?

R: Es una pregunta muy difícil de responder para mí porque de verdad lo editorial es mi vida y lo amo demasiado pero si tuviera que estudiar algo me gustaría que fuera algo relacionado con las artes.

// You’ve already completed two careers in Journalism & Economy but, is there another career that you would like to pursue?

R: It’s a really hard question for me to answer since editorial life is my passion & I absolutely love it but if I had to choose another career to study it would probably have to be related to the arts.

10. Por ahí leí que te gusta mucho Panamá ¿cuál es tu cosa favorita de nuestro país?

R: Me encanta que me recuerda bastante a el lugar donde crecí, Miami. Me fascina el calor de la gente, el clima & el mix de culturas que se encuentra aquí.

// Somewhere in the world wide web I found out that you really like Panama, what are those factors that make you feel so drawn to our country?

R: I adore that it reminds me so much of Miami, where I grew up. How warm the people is, the weather, the cultures mix, these are other things that make me come back to Panama, and this is my 5^th time here!

11. Y ¿cómo ves la industria de la moda en Panamá?

R: Me llama mucho la atención el crecimiento tan rápido que está teniendo Panamá, la presencia de cada vez más marcas nos asegura que algo está sucediendo y que hay que prestarle atención. También se puede ver la platea de opciones que hay para cada tipo de consumidor, tienes desde Versace, Gucci, Prada y Dior hasta Bershka, Zara, hay para todos los gustos y precios.

// And, how do you weigh on Panama’s fashion industry?

R: It really catches my eye how fast it is growing, Panama is changing day by day & the presence of all these new brands & designers serves us as a thermometer that at the end states that something’s happening. Another thing that I really like it’s the wide plethora of options Panamanians have when it comes to shopping, you’ve got from Prada, Cavalli, Valentino, Dior to Bershka, Zara, etc. it really is for everyone.

12. Si tuvieras que seleccionar un diseñador que represente de la mejor manera tu alter ego ¿cuál sería?

R: Hahahah que difícil la pregunta! Yo tengo un estilo muy sencillo y femenino. Creo que nunca en la vida utilizaría un vestido de Alexander McQueen, es muy extravagante así que sería como hacer de un personaje, y digo, [McQueen] me encanta editorialmente pero rompería totalmente con el molde de mi estilo.

// If you had to pick one designer or brand that best represents your alter ego, which one would it be?

R: This is a really tough question! I think I’ve got my personal pretty much figured out but I think I would never wear an Alexander McQueen dress, I mean I love them, editorially, but they are so extravagant that it would be me playing a character, it would definitely break all the molds of my style.
